The PPGHIS admission process takes place once a year, for both master’s and doctoral degrees. The Call for Applications can vary significantly from one year to the next, and therefore it is very important to carefully read the details of the Call for Applications in effect that year. It is an extremely elaborate process, which involves the entire faculty of the Program.
Calls for Applications are usually published in August of each year, and the admission process takes place between the beginning of October, and it concludes in December. Between 2020 and 2022, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these dates were changed.
Since 2018, registration for the PPGHIS selection process has taken place exclusively online, for a maximum of 30 vacancies.
For the 2024 selection process, we had 267 applications, 199 from candidates for the Master’s course and 68 for the PhD course.
For all appeals, the Selection Coordination is the last decision-making body, and no external appeals are possible.
International applicants may follow a different path to enter the Program, as shown on the website.
Academic paths: science and funding
An internationalized academic training is essential to the development of fundamental intellectual capacities, and the consolidation of professionals in science. This demand contrasts with the drastic budget cuts currently visible at national and international levels, in a context that is hitting Human Sciences the hardest.
Sephis and LabHen laboratories are promoting the workshop “Academic Paths: Science and Financing,” intended to present PPGHIS/UFRJ students with introductory funding possibilities and strategies for identifying institutional and financial opportunities. These skills are necessary to pursue doctoral or postdoctoral experiences abroad that are consistent with the students’ motivations and have a higher impact on their working community.

Sylvia has been working at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam since 2017. She started as the university’s representative for Latin America, promoting bachelor’s and master’s programs in the region. Over the years, her role has expanded to include developing strategic partnerships, setting up joint research projects, and coordinating academic mobility between Latin America and the Netherlands. With a background in Communication Studies and as the founder of her own intercultural communication training company, she specializes in Latin American cultures and cross-cultural collaboration. Sylvia is fluent in Dutch, English, and Spanish, and currently learning Portuguese. She is passionate about creating meaningful, sustainable academic exchange and believes that true internationalization requires cultural sensitivity, mutual learning, and long-term commitment.
Luis Toledo Machado
Pesquisador de pós-doutorado na Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (Espanha), vinculado ao Centro de Pesquisa Interuniversitária em Paisagens Atlânticas Culturais (CISPAC). Investiga o papel das comunidades rurais alternativas como agentes de transformação das relações entre ser humano e natureza. Doutor em História Contemporânea pela Universidade Autônoma de Madri (2023), é membro dos grupos de pesquisa HISTAGRA e HISTOPIA, do Conselho Editorial da Revista de Estudios Utópicos REUTOPÍA e fez um estágio acadêmico na Universidade de Princeton (EUA). Atualmente desenvolve trabalho de pesquisa no Laboratório de História e Natureza (LabHeN).

International Applicants
International applicants who are not applying to PPGHIS fellowships will be evaluated by the International Affairs Committee in a separate selection process, with rolling admission deadlines.
A. To receive a conditional acceptance letter, which will be confirmed only after the concession of a valid non-PPGHIS fellowship, the applicant must submit to the PPGHIS office the following documentation by email (ppghis.ufrj@gmail.com):
- A digital copy of the undergraduate diploma;
- A digital copy of the undergraduate official transcript, for master applicants. Applicants to the doctoral program must also include a copy of their graduate official transcript;
- Curriculum Vitae or Lattes Curriculum;
- Research project for both master and doctoral applicants, in the style defined in the PPGHIS website (see guidelines for master and doctoral applicants, in the official call for applications for this year);
- Statement of intent declaring the applicant will be available during the period required for completion of the course;
- Statement from the candidate identifying potential advisors at PPGHIS;
- Two confidential letters of recommendation from qualified professionals (preferably faculty), emailed to the PPGHIS address (ppghis.ufrj@gmail.com or ppghis@historia.ufrj.br). In the letter, the writer should include information on how and for how long s/he knew the applicant, as well as evaluate the applicant´s academic performance and potential for graduate studies in history. The email should remain confidential and must be dated before the day scheduled for the meeting of the Master or Doctoral Selection Committee.
B. To register in the Program, applicants must first show proof of concession of a valid international fellowship and/or PEC-PG (CAPES) before the deadline for enrollment for the first semester of the academic year.
C. Deadline for online application is August 29th of the current year. Excepcionally applications after this date may be considered, with reasonable justification.
D. The International Affairs Committee will evaluate complete applications until September 30 of the same year, when the results will be announced.

Nos últimos dias, a professora Monica Lima e Souza, membro dos dois programas de pós-graduação signatários desta nota, ambos da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, sofreu uma série de críticas a partir de um posicionamento tomado em uma reunião. Nas redes sociais, este episódio acabou ganhando enorme visibilidade e, como é típico do mundo virtual, a imagem da professora foi exposta, muitas vezes de modo pejorativo. Tendo em vista este cenário, viemos a público manifestar nossa solidariedade a uma profissional que, nas últimas décadas, vem primando por uma atuação de inegável rigor, qualidade acadêmica, sempre guiada por valores democráticos e inclusivos, além de marcada pela evidente cordialidade no trato. Monica é uma professora de alto valor e uma pesquisadora fundamental para nossos programas, nossos estudantes, assim como para seus colegas.

Lançamento do livro “Lugares de Memória dos Trabalhadores”, de Paulo Fontes (org.)
O LEHMT/UFRJ tem o prazer de convidá-los para os lançamentos do livro “Lugares de Memória dos Trabalhadores”. Publicado pela Editora Alameda em parceria com a Fundação Perseu Abramo e apoio do PPGHIS/UFRJ, a obra é organizada por Paulo Fontes, professor do Instituto de História da UFRJ, e reúne 100 artigos curtos escritos por renomados/as especialistas.
As marcas das experiências dos trabalhadores e trabalhadoras brasileiros estão espalhadas por inúmeros lugares da cidade e do campo. Muitos desses locais não mais existem, outros estão esquecidos, pouquíssimos são celebrados. Na batalha de memórias, os mundos do trabalho e seus lugares também são negligenciados. Baseado na série de mesmo nome do portal lehmt.org, esse livro procura justamente dar visibilidade para essa geografia social, ao estimular uma reflexão sobre os espaços onde vivemos e como sua história e memória são tratadas. Os textos contam a história de lugares de atuação política e social, de lazer, de protestos, de repressão, de rituais e de criação de sociabilidades. Espaços que contam a história do Brasil.
O lançamento no Rio de Janeiro será na quarta-feira, 10 de julho, entre 17h30 e 20h, na Livraria Leonardo da Vinci (Av. Rio Branco 185, subsolo 1).
